Webelos Transition and Troop Information:
There are many good troops for Webelos to join. Your pack may have a troop which is sponsored by the same organization, but meet on a different night/place. Selecting the right troop is very important for boy to enjoy and for the parent to be associated with.
1. Not every troop is for every boy. Therefore Webelos and parents should visit 3 troops at a minimum. Even if you have a troop sponsored by the same organization. Each troop has its own personality.
2. Does the troop have a Webelo Invitational for your Webelo Den to attend?
3. Your son and you should look for the following:
A. Does the troop have a variety of activities, including a campout each month and summer camp? Are they activities your son will enjoy?
B. Does the troop have enough active trained leaders.
C. Is the troop a manageable size which provides each scout the attention they need? Even large troops can provide the proper attention, if they have a good leader to scout ratio.
D. Does the troop have a solid troop program planned by the scouts?
E. Is the troop boy ran? Does the troop use the "patrol method"?
F. Does the troop want the parent to be active as a leader or committee member?
G. Does the troop have a parent patrol for outing?
H. Does the troop have scouts obtaining the Eagle rank? What is the percentage? How is the leadership helping those scouts obtain the Eagle rank?
I. How does the troop integrate new scout into the troop?
J. What is the monthly, outing, and annual cost, equipment expected, and does the troop have fundraisers for scouts to earn money to offset the cost?
It is so important for your son to select the right troop. It should be a positive experience that he and you will remember for a lifetime.
